Founded in 1927 and holding more than 12,000 art pieces, the Speed Art Museum is the oldest and largest art museum in Kentucky. Its collection spans more than 6,000 years, including works by the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations as well as paintings by American artists like James Peale and Benjamin West. A sizable portion of the collection is devoted to the art of Kentucky, with special emphasis on works created in the 1800s; other areas include a collection of Native American artifacts, decorative arts from Europe and America, African art and contemporary art. Positioned within the campus of the University of Louisville, the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs is just a few miles distant.
